The Fold House

THE PROJECT

A contemporary home arranged around a protected mature tree. Two simple volumes step gently across the slope, meeting at a courtyard that holds afternoon light.

We folded the plan around the existing canopy, using a low stone plinth and upper timber volume to answer different levels of the site. Windows frame the garden rather than expose it. A narrow internal gallery gives the home its natural rhythm.

01 / THE BRIEF

Making space for
what matters.

The family asked for a house that could take an active household in its stride, while leaving room for quiet work and changing routines. They wanted privacy without enclosure.

02 / THE APPROACH

Measured decisions.
Lasting places.

We folded the plan around the existing canopy, using a low stone plinth and upper timber volume to answer different levels of the site. Windows frame the garden rather than expose it. A narrow internal gallery gives the home its natural rhythm.

Douglas fir, pale concrete, limestone and recycled terrazzo make a durable, tactile whole. Finishes were selected to weather naturally, not to remain untouched.

03 / MATERIAL REGISTER

carefully joined.

FROM THE CLIENT
“They listened closely, then found a way to make the place feel like it had always wanted to be this way.”
