House on Gunmakers Lane

THE PROJECT

The brief was straightforward on paper: bring daylight into a narrow Victorian townhouse without erasing the intimacy that made it worth keeping. The answer took shape as a sequence of rooms, each borrowing light from the next.

We held the existing brick structure wherever possible, moving the main living spaces around a new internal lightwell. A slender oak stair makes the transition between old and new legible without demanding attention. Kitchen joinery follows the geometry of the site; limestone stays deliberately quiet beside the warmth of the timber.

01 / THE BRIEF

Making space for
what matters.

The client wanted a place for family life that would feel calm during the week and generous with guests at the weekend. The original building had beautiful bones, but little connection to the rear garden.

02 / THE APPROACH

Measured decisions.
Lasting places.

We held the existing brick structure wherever possible, moving the main living spaces around a new internal lightwell. A slender oak stair makes the transition between old and new legible without demanding attention. Kitchen joinery follows the geometry of the site; limestone stays deliberately quiet beside the warmth of the timber.

A restrained palette of limewash, European oak and honed limestone carries through to small brass details. Every junction was reviewed with the workshop before it reached site.

FROM THE CLIENT
“They listened closely, then found a way to make the place feel like it had always wanted to be this way.”
